Ruby Rafters

Travel Program
|
AGES 9-11

This inflatable kayaking flotilla journey is perfect for everyone—from total beginners to seasoned paddlers. We’ll kick things off with a fun day of lakeside training led by the Academy’s boating specialists, where you’ll learn the basics, build confidence, and get your first strokes dialed. Then it’s time to take your skills to the river!

Gear up as we head to the stunning Ruby Horsethief section of the Colorado River. With boards, dry bags, and overnight supplies packed, we’ll paddle into the breathtaking canyon, where rugged cliffs meet peaceful waters. Over three amazing days, we’ll find our flow—honing paddle techniques, building core strength, and enjoying time on the water as we wind through the twists and turns of the canyon.

Nights are spent on remote river beaches, complete with campfire time, stargazing, and that unbeatable feeling of being tucked into the high desert wilderness with your crew. Wake up to a golden canyon sunrise and paddle your way out of this magical stretch of river.

Important: Students will spend most of this program on the river. PFDs will always be worn, but participants should be confident swimmers and comfortable around moving water.

Telluride Academy's Overnight Policy

Our talented instructors work hard to combat student homesickness on overnight programs. For many students, this experience might be their first time camping or away from home! In the days leading up to the overnight(s), the instructors have positive conversations with the groups to get them excited and prepared for their overnight adventures. This dynamic gets interrupted when a student is picked up early from their overnight. For this reason, we can not accommodate early pick-ups, unless in the case of an emergency. If your child does not want to attend the overnight, or if you have prior commitments that require early pick-up accommodations, we ask that you consider choosing a day program instead. Please call our office with any questions or concerns.
