Lunar Llamas: A Backcountry Adventure That’s Out of This World!
Blast off into an unforgettable llama trekking adventure designed just for 10-12 year olds! This epic journey starts at Little Molas Lake, where we’ll hike 3 miles to our cozy base camp at the headwaters of Bear Creek. With a gentle elevation gain of 600 feet, it’s the perfect introduction to backcountry trekking, complete with sweeping mountain views.
From our base camp, the fun really takes off! On the first layover day, we’ll hike along the ridge toward Bear Mountain, soaking in jaw-dropping views of the Putnam Basin below. Day two takes us along the famous Colorado Trail into Lime Creek for even more breathtaking scenery and adventure. On the final day, we’ll hike back to our starting point, completing this loop with memories to last a lifetime.
This intro-to-llama-trekking experience pairs young adventurers with the gentle giants from Redwood Llamas. These furry friends will help carry the heavy gear while teaching trekkers how to care for them and travel safely in the wilderness. Along the way, campers will learn essential wilderness skills, explore scenic valleys and mountain-top vistas, and enjoy pack-free day hikes from our perfectly perched base camp.
Backpacks, sleeping pads, sleeping bags—and of course, llamas—are all provided! You’ll learn how to properly pack your gear, adjust your pack for comfort, and fully embrace the backcountry spirit.
So, what are you waiting for? Get your “Llama On” with Lunar Llamas and make this an adventure to remember!
*All participants in need will receive Telluride Academy backpacks, sleeping bags and sleeping pads while participating in this program! We ask that you bring your child’s belongings in a duffle bag on the first morning so instructors can help students properly pack their provided backpacks.
Important Notes: Though llamas will carry most of the group gear, students will still be required to hike mild terrain carrying their personal belongings on their backs. Please pack a good rain jacket and pair of rain pants, as afternoon monsoons are likely this time of year. It also gets chilly at night, so warm layers are a necessity. Students will be camping at high elevation. We strongly recommend arriving to Telluride a few days early for any student prone to altitude sickness.
