Llama Trek-O-Rama: Your Next Big Adventure Awaits!
Pack your sense of adventure and get ready to explore the wild beauty of Colorado’s backcountry—with llamas leading the way! This five-day journey is a perfect blend of fun, challenge, and discovery. You’ll meet our trusty, fluffy companions who will carry the heavy gear, so you can focus on soaking up the breathtaking scenery of the San Juan Mountains with just your essentials in your pack.
We’ll hike above 11,000 feet to our high alpine base camp in the stunning Putnam Basin, nestled beside a cascading mountain stream at timberline. From this perfect spot, the adventure takes off! Spend your days hiking sections of the famous Colorado Trail, summiting peaks for jaw-dropping views, and bonding with your llama buddies. Test their agility with llama obstacle courses, then kick back by the fire each evening under starry mountain skies.
By week’s end, you’ll have new friends, incredible stories, and a newfound appreciation for these amazing animals. Don’t miss this llama-tastic adventure that’s equal parts challenge, fun, and llama love!

*Important Note: Though llamas will carry much of the group gear, students will still be required to hike moderate terrain carrying moderate weight in their packs. Please pack rain gear for afternoon monsoons and warm layers for cool evenings. Students will be camping above 11,000 feet. We strongly recommend arriving to Telluride a few days early for any student prone to altitude sickness.
*Students are required to provide a proper trekking backpack, sleeping bag, and sleeping pad for this program. However, participants in need may borrow Telluride Academy backpacks, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads while participating in this program!
Schedule:
Day 1: Meet and greet! Meal planning, grocery shopping (in Durango) and campout in Silverton.
Day 2: Meet the llamas! Pack the panniers and take off for the trail. Hike into the Colorado Trail and set up base camp!
Day 3 & 4: Day hikes and exploration. Lots of laughs, llama games, gourmet camp cuisine and fun around the campfire.
Day 5: Hike back out to the trailhead. Say goodbye to our llama friends and take a hot springs soak on the way home! Hugs and high fives.
