Cherry Chasers

Travel Program
|
AGES 10-12

Our “Cherry Chasers” program combines our love for the river with our love for sustainable agriculture, fresh-picked fruit and homemade goodies. We’ll spend Monday learning about river features, how to read water, paddle with proper technique and practice safety as individuals and as a group. On Tuesday we’ll launch the lower Gunnison River and paddle five miles through the Dominguez-Escalante Canyon to our riverside camp at Honey Rock Landing. At Honey Rock, we’ll have a farm-to-table dinner before setting up camp by the orchard. Wednesday morning we will have an engaging farm tour while picking buckets of cherries. After packing up camp, we’ll paddle to our next riverside camp, surrounded by hidden swimming holes and sandy beaches. On our final day, we’ll paddle to the take-out and drive back to Telluride where we’ll make our very own jars of homemade jam before saying goodbye to our newfound friends. Let’s paddle, pick, and preserve an unforgettable adventure!

Important Notes: Students will be on the river for most of this program. Though PFDs will be worn on the water, students should be confident swimmers and feel comfortable around moving water.

Telluride Academy's Overnight Policy

Our talented instructors work hard to combat student homesickness on overnight programs. For many students, this experience might be their first time camping or away from home! In the days leading up to the overnight(s), the instructors have positive conversations with the groups to get them excited and prepared for their overnight adventures. This dynamic gets interrupted when a student is picked up early from their overnight. For this reason, we can not accommodate early pick-ups, unless in the case of an emergency. If your child does not want to attend the overnight, or if you have prior commitments that require early pick-up accommodations, we ask that you consider choosing a day program instead. Please call our office with any questions or concerns.
