Telluride, nestled among the towering peaks of the San Juan Mountains, has long been a haven for mountain enthusiasts. “Trailblazers” is an alpine excursion designed to focus on the self-supported exploration of the area’s breathtaking wildflower meadows and majestic mountains. Participants will load their trekking packs and embark on a two-night journey to our wilderness base camp, where alpine adventures await. Guided by Yvon Chouinard’s wisdom that “HOW you climb a mountain is more important than reaching the top,” students will participate in workshops about fundamental backpacking skills. From trip planning and map reading to route finding, Leave No Trace principles, and understanding weather patterns, aspiring mountaineers will immerse themselves in the enchanting world of self-supported backpacking.
All participants will receive Telluride Academy backpacks, sleeping bags and sleeping pads while participating in this program! We ask that you bring your child’s belongings in a duffle bag on the first morning so instructors can help students properly pack their provided backpacks.
