Backcountry Boys: Adventure, Exploration, and Brotherhood in the Great Outdoors!

Gear up for an unforgettable two-night backpacking journey with the Backcountry Boys! This all-boys adventure is made just for 8-10 year olds ready to explore the rugged beauty of the Lizard Head Wilderness and dive into the thrill of outdoor living.

Hike through stunning alpine meadows, set up your own wilderness camp, and fall asleep under a sky full of stars. Along the way, you’ll learn cool backcountry skills like trail navigation, Leave No Trace practices, and how to build the perfect campsite—all taught by our experienced guides.

But this trip isn’t just about learning—it’s about FUN! Swap stories by the campfire, splash around in mountain streams, and bond with your fellow adventurers in the great outdoors. Whether you’re tackling a trail or spotting wildlife, every moment is packed with excitement and discovery.

This is the perfect trip for adventurous boys ready to build confidence, teamwork, and unforgettable memories in the heart of nature. Let the adventure begin!

All participants in need will receive Telluride Academy backpacks, sleeping bags and sleeping pads while participating in this program! Gear will be used by instructors to teach proper packing techniques on the first day and will go home with students the night before their overnight backpacking trips. We ask that you bring an empty duffel bag on the morning of your overnights so your child’s gear can be taken home easily at the end of the program.

Telluride Academy's Overnight Policy

Our talented instructors work hard to combat student homesickness on overnight programs. For many students, this experience might be their first time camping or away from home! In the days leading up to the overnight(s), the instructors have positive conversations with the groups to get them excited and prepared for their overnight adventures. This dynamic gets interrupted when a student is picked up early from their overnight. For this reason, we can not accommodate early pick-ups, unless in the case of an emergency. If your child does not want to attend the overnight, or if you have prior commitments that require early pick-up accommodations, we ask that you consider choosing a day program instead. Please call our office with any questions or concerns.
