Thank you for an amazing 43rd summer at Telluride Academy!

Peak Project

Overnight Program
|
AGES 9-11

Telluride is home to both mountains and mountaineers alike and for decades this magical valley has called many to make their journey upwards. It is said, that when climbing mountains “It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves” and that one should climb mountains “not so the world can see you but so you can see the world!” These alpine excursions will focus on an iconic Telluride peak, with the objective of an attempted summit. We’ll pack everything into our trekking packs and hike into our wilderness base camp for two nights of alpine adventure. Using Yvon Chouinard’s quote “HOW you climb a mountain is more important than reaching the top” as a guide, students will receive thorough instruction on basic mountaineering skills. From pre-trip planning, map reading and route finding, to setting up proper base camps, Leave No Trace ethics and understanding weather, aspiring mountaineers will immerse themselves in the magic, mystery and allure of mountain climbing.

All participants will receive Telluride Academy backpacks, sleeping bags and sleeping pads while participating in this program! Gear will be used by instructors to teach proper packing techniques on the first day and will go home with students the night before their overnight backpacking trips. We ask that you bring an empty duffel bag on the morning of your overnights so your child’s gear can be taken home easily at the end of the program.

Telluride Academy's Overnight Policy

Our talented instructors work hard to combat student homesickness on overnight programs. For many students, this experience might be their first time camping or away from home! In the days leading up to the overnight(s), the instructors have positive conversations with the groups to get them excited and prepared for their overnight adventures. This dynamic gets interrupted when a student is picked up early from their overnight. For this reason, we can not accommodate early pick-ups, unless in the case of an emergency. If your child does not want to attend the overnight, or if you have prior commitments that require early pick-up accommodations, we ask that you consider choosing a day program instead. Please call our office with any questions or concerns.
