Thank you for an amazing 43rd summer at Telluride Academy!

Hut Hut Hike

Overnight Program
|
AGES 10-12

Hut, Hut, HIKE is an exciting program that allows campers to experience the wonders of the wilderness while still enjoying the cozy quarters of a backcountry hut. Nestled high in the San Juan Mountains, under the shadow of Sheep Mountain is the High Camp Hut. Accessed by a short trek into the backcountry, students will live in a massive mountain lodge that is fully equipped with a kitchen, lounging areas, wood burning stoves and cozy sleeping quarters! This immersive week-long adventure of high-alpine off-the-grid living, will include workshops such as safe mountain travel, watershed education and interactive team building initiatives. It is here, in our outdoor classroom, that students will acquire skills for a future of adventures and inquiry-based learning. At night, our backcountry base camp will be the perfect place to tell stories by the fire and cook delicious mountain meals. Don’t miss out on a BIG alpine adventure designed for our most enthusiastic, adventurous expeditionists.

Important Notes: High Camp sits at over 11,000 feet. We recommend arriving to Telluride a few days early for any student prone to altitude sickness.

All participants will receive Telluride Academy backpacks, sleeping bags and sleeping pads while participating in this program! Gear will be used by instructors to teach proper packing techniques on the first day and will go home with students the night before their overnight backpacking trips. We ask that you bring an empty duffel bag on the morning of your overnights so your child’s gear can be taken home easily at the end of the program.

Telluride Academy's Overnight Policy

Our talented instructors work hard to combat student homesickness on overnight programs. For many students, this experience might be their first time camping or away from home! In the days leading up to the overnight(s), the instructors have positive conversations with the groups to get them excited and prepared for their overnight adventures. This dynamic gets interrupted when a student is picked up early from their overnight. For this reason, we can not accommodate early pick-ups, unless in the case of an emergency. If your child does not want to attend the overnight, or if you have prior commitments that require early pick-up accommodations, we ask that you consider choosing a day program instead. Please call our office with any questions or concerns.
